The current position of drill in ELT

in English Aim of the thesis: The aim of this diploma thesis is to define the term drill and depict its current use within the English lesson and also assess its role within the language school, where drill is used as a primary teaching technique. Drill is a technique which went through its greatest development when the Audiolingual method became widespread but gradually, throughout the time of the Communicative approach, it began to lose popularity. Despite this, the drill has not been completely forgotten. Not only can we see drill exercises in modern textbooks, but we also encounter drill in the classroom. Drill has been defined in the theoretical section, where its forms have also been described. In addition, the use of drill in various different methods has been further elaborated on and the reasons that led to its downfall. Theoretical part: The aim here is to answer a number of questions: Why do teachers use drill? What are the drawbacks? What do learners prefer as an alternative? Why do some learners deliberately sign up for classes in language schools where drill is mainly used and what results and experience the language school has with drill? The Communicative Approach to Second Language Teaching in Current Textbooks of Czech for Foreigners Jarmila Valková Abstract The general part of the thesis reviews the background, current understanding and key principles of the Communicative Approach to second language teaching with regard to their foundation in the Direct Oral Method. The objective, usual teaching techniques and textbook components of Communicative Language Teaching are compared to the ones used in the Grammar-Translation Method to show the essential difference between the direct and indirect language approaches to language acquisition and their implications for the character of textbook components. The research part of the thesis examines selected textbooks of Czech as a second language which are supposed to epitomise the following tendencies in the area of contemporary writing of textbooks of Czech for foreigners: a) consistent use of the strategies and textbook components based on the Grammar- Translation Method, b) eclectic application of Grammar-Translation strategies and components together with certain features of the Communicative Approach, c) coherent implementation of the Communicative Approach with related techniques and textbook components. Availability of sports facilities and sports equipment in municipal elementary schools in region of Tabor

My Bachelor´s thesis is focused on mapping of all sports halls, gyms and other covered and opened sport facilities in municipalities of Tabor with up to 1000 inhabitants where elementary schools were founded. Other goal was to find out how effectively they are used, how equipped they are and what teachers and students think about current condition of these facilities. The thesis points out physical training and sports carried out in elementary schools. Data for the practical part of thesis was collected with use of assembled questionnaire and its dissemination in all concerned schools. The result of this research in region of Tabor was satisfactory except of elementary school in Stadlec where I recommend putting more stress on cooperation with villages in neighborhood for better financing in order to improve its condition or construction of new ones.
